Active Schools Virtual Awards: Girls Ambassador of the Year
Naomi Morrison
Naomi is a S6 pupil at St Thomas of Aquins HS and has been involved with the sports programme since S3 where she attended a dance club. As her confidence grew, Naomi began to lead small parts of the dance sessions whilst being mentored by the lead coach. Naomi was nominated by her coach to take part in the Dance Leaders course provided by Edinburgh Dance Academy. This gave Naomi her first experience of planning and delivering dance sessions. Naomi has volunteered at Active Schools neighbourhood dance shows and city-wide Dance Extravaganzas.
Naomi sits on the School Sports Council and works in partnership with the school guidance department / PE and Active Schools, to identify and engage girls who needed encouragement to attend PE and after school clubs. Naomi also mentored disengaged girls at the Active Schools Girls Day Out.
Eleanor Noble
Eleanor was initially selected as a Girls Ambassador as she was identified as a non-participant in PE and someone who would benefit from some inspiration. Eleanor was invited to attend the Active Schools ‘Girls Day Out’ and it was from this day that Eleanor has demonstrated an enthusiasm and passion for embracing a more active lifestyle for herself and for others like her. She is part of the Sports Council and has joined clubs, attended development opportunities as part of the Active Schools training programme and been involved in a range of school events.
Eleanor was invited back to the Girls Day Out as a Keynote Speaker where she delivered a personal account of the difference her attendance at the event had made to her. Eleanor has since become one of Portobello High School’s Young Ambassadors.
Bethany Watters
Bethany became the school’s first Girls Ambassador and she has been an amazing role model for the girls in her school. Bethany was instrumental in helping to organise and promote the P7-S1 Active Girls Day. She inspires the primary pupils by leading the primary dance sessions and gymnastics club. She focuses on progression, demonstrates effectively and helps individual pupils learn. She is very enthusiastic and reliable and took part in Active School’s Coach Academy. Bethany is currently undertaking her swimming Scottish Swimming Teacher Qualification and wants to complete her NPLQ. Bethany volunteers with primary and high school clubs across a range of activities and has signed up for a variety of CPD opportunities. She is a fantastic role model.
