Activity description

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: A willingness to speak the Gaelic you already know, however little and an openness to developing your fluency. You will have a general understanding of written Gaelic and be ready to make the switch to listening and speaking a living language. The class will take place in a physically accessible building. Particular requests are welcome and we will endeavour to meet all potential students' access needs. GENERAL AIM OF THE COURSE: This course is designed to build your understanding, confidence and fluency through: - preparing discussion topics; - listening and comprehension exercises - radio, spoken word, games; - reading aloud - contemporary articles and short stories; - audio recordings from across Scotland's Gaelic-speaking areas; and - Gaelic poetry and song. We will use a variety of learning materials, including online resources in class and for homework. Familiarisation with vocabulary for specific subjects, seasons and celebrations will be intergral to our weekly gatherings. Students at different levels are welcome and will be supported in tasks appropriate to their current language ability. The classes will be friendly and fun, whilst pushing our knowledge of Gaelic forward in a dynamic way. GENERAL APPROACH TO THE COURSE: Everyone will be invited to contribute to the class plans at the first session. The format will include short spoken 'yarns'/reports from students to start each week, conversation practice, reading aloud and discussing Gaelic texts and, for thiose at a higher level, listening and responding to audio materials. We will aim to have at least one visit to a city institution during the course. MATERIAL REQUIRED BY STUDENTS: In most cases, access to internet will be the most useful material for this course. Handouts will be prepared by the tutor in the most suitable formats.
