Activity description

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENTS: There are no special requirements. Everyone is welcome in this course, whatever their level of prior experience. HEALTH AND SAFETY GUIDELINES: (If required) A health questionnaire will be emailed to enrolled students and must be returned prior to the course start date. The course contains practical dance element which involves some light physical activity like a typical ceilidh or Scottish country dance session including hops, jumps, turns and galops. If you have an underlying health condition which physical activity could make worse, please consult your doctor before joining the course. If you are over 69 years of age and you are not used to being very active, check with your doctor first. If you have any traumas please let the course leader know. Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes for the session and bring water in cap bottles to stay hydrated. OVERVIEW / INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE: Country dance as a dance form has been danced since Elizabeth I’s times. The tradition continues today in different styles e.g. Scottish Country Dance, English Country Dance, Contra and others. In this workshop we will look at what can be called the Golden Age of country dancing when it was the leading dance in the Ballrooms across Europe and North America. We will look at the varieties existed in the UK, France, Spain, Netherlands, German lands, and other distant lands trying the instructions and steps popular in the 18th and early 19th centuries ballrooms. HOW THE COURSE WILL BE TAUGHT: The course runs for 3 hours with a short break. The workshop starts with warm-up and finish with cool-down exercises to prevent the risk of injury. The steps will be shown suitable for different dance experiences. The dances will be walked through and called. Course notes with brief information about dances, sources and dance descriptions will be provided. WHAT STUDENTS CAN EXPECT TO LEARN: Students will learn about the various styles of country dances existed in Europe in the 18th &19th centuries. They will gain understanding of the roles of dance in society as well as how modern dance styles emerged. RESOURCES REQUIRED BY STUDENTS / ADDITIONAL COSTS: You will need to wear comfortable clothes and shoes for dancing.
