Activity description

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENTS: No special requirements. Just an interest in learning more about mosses and liverworts, and able and happy to spend a few hours walking around woodland and other habitats in the Inch House / Craigmillar Castle area of Edinburgh. The weekly meeting point will be sent to enrolled students prior to the course start date. HEALTH AND SAFETY GUIDELINES: At the moment, there is no requirement to wear masks outdoors, or to socially distance. To mitigate the transmission of Covid, we will be running smaller classes in any outdoor course and ask students to be aware of their own sanitising requirements. If Scottish Government rules change by the start of the course, we will update everyone involved. OVERVIEW / INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE: We will have a brief indoor introductory session on the first morning, but otherwise the course will be outdoors looking at mosses and liverworts in the grounds of Inch House and Craigmillar Castle. The aim of the course will be to introduce participants to the range of growth forms of mosses and liverworts, their habitats and ecology, and the ways to identify the species we find. HOW THE COURSE WILL BE TAUGHT: It will be taught outside, looking at mosses and liverworts in a range of habitats within walking distance from Inch House. We will have a lunch break in the middle of the day. WHAT STUDENTS CAN EXPECT TO LEARN: Basic anatomy of mosses and liverworts. How to tell mosses and liverworts apart. How to identify a number of moss and liverwort species. Some aspects of moss and liverwort ecology and their significance in ecosystems more widely. RESOURCES REQUIRED BY STUDENTS / ADDITIONAL COSTS: Clothing and footwear to suit the weather, and a packed lunch on each day. A hand lens is really useful, though people might not all have one, so I will bring at least one with me. If people have binoculars they can use them like a hand lens by looking through them backwards. If participants have any moss/liverwort books it would be good to bring them along. WHAT WILL HAPPEN IN BAD WEATHER: If the weather is too bad for us to go outside I can do indoor sessions on the subject, helped by materials (I can bring a selection of specimens + hand lenses, books, etc) and, if there is a digital projector available, by talks illustrated with photos.
