Activity description

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENTS: No entry requirements. The weekly meeting point/itinerary will be sent to enrolled students prior to the course start date. HEALTH AND SAFETY GUIDELINES: At the moment, there is no requirement to wear masks outdoors, or to socially distance. To mitigate the transmission of Covid, we will be running smaller classes in any outdoor course and ask students to be aware of their own sanitising requirements. If Scottish Government rules change by the start of the course, we will update everyone involved. OVERVIEW / INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE: Navigation, the skill of moving from one place to another, is a task most people undertake every day. This course, delivered by a qualified outdoor instructor and trained navigation tutor, will build on previous experience and introduce a systematic approach to using map and compass to navigate. A range of maps and exercises will be introduced out-of-doors at a number of locations in SE Edinburgh to develop navigation skills and strategies for land navigation, whether on foot, by bike or even on inland waterbodies. HOW THE COURSE WILL BE TAUGHT: First session will be used to establish previous experience of participants and their own personal aims for learning and use of the skills. Focus will be on practical delivery of all elements out of doors, with advice about sources of additional free online materials to enhance the experience and allow participants to reflect on what they have learned. Use of permanent or virtual orienteering courses would be used to allow a rapid cycle of planning, executing and reflecting on navigation legs. Working in pairs or as a group would be used to distribute tasks and cognitive load. No summative assessment, focus is on improvement of skills and understanding relative to benchmark from the first session. WHAT STUDENTS CAN EXPECT TO LEARN: By the end of the course students will have learned/be able to: - Navigate with confidence on paths and tracks using a range of navigation tools and strategies - Use a compass or ground features to set the map to grid north - Understand rights and responsibilities under the Scottish Outdoor Access Code. RESOURCES REQUIRED BY STUDENTS / ADDITIONAL COSTS: Tutor can supply compasses if required or students can purchase their own. WHAT WILL HAPPEN IN BAD WEATHER: The course will go ahead following a slightly different route, unless extreme bad weather.
