Activity description

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENTS: Students must be willing to try out a range of drawing and painting materials and techniques as well as a variety of subject matter (e.g Still Life, Landscape, Portrait) They will also be expected to bring their own drawing and painting materials but will receive notice of what is required in advance. HEALTH AND SAFETY GUIDELINES: Students will be issued with Guidelines on keeping safe in relation to Covid 19 while attending their course. We would ask that these are read prior to attending and adhered to for your benefit and the rest of the course participants. These have been produced in conjunction with Scottish government and CEC guidelines and may be subject to change. OVERVIEW / INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE: This course will cover a range of drawing and painting techniques in a variety of media. Students will be guided through basic drawing skills, featuring plenty of tips on how to accurately represent what they see. The course will begin with line drawing, progressing onto tonal drawing in ink and charcoal, and gradually moving towards full colour painting in acrylics and/or watercolours. A diverse selection of still life subjects will be set up in the studio, with opportunities to explore other subjects such as landscape and portraiture from photographs. HOW THE COURSE WILL BE TAUGHT: We will look at a range of examples of the work of other artists. The tutor will provide practical demonstrations at the start of each class, and one to one guidance as students work. The classes will end with a brief group discussion of the work produced, with an emphasis on supportiveness and building confidence. WHAT STUDENTS CAN EXPECT TO LEARN: Beginner students will learn the basics of how to approach drawing and painting different subjects from observation (how to see form, perspective, proportions, tone and colour) and how to effectively use a range of materials. For more experienced students, there will be opportunity for experimentation and building upon existing skills with one-to-one guidance from the tutor – For example, how to create a pleasing composition. RESOURCES REQUIRED BY STUDENTS / ADDITIONAL COSTS: It will be helpful for students to have their own sketchbook (A3 size minimum); Acrylic and/or watercolour paint set; Brushes; Some heavier weight paper for painting projects (other materials tbc once resources available in studio are confirmed (e.g pencil, eraser, pencil sharpener, palettes, water pots). Students should enter the building via the main entrance - in front of the canal.
