Activity description
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENTS: No entry requirements, all levels welcome. HEALTH AND SAFETY GUIDELINES: Students will be issued with Guidelines on keeping safe in relation to Covid 19 while attending their course. We would ask that these are read prior to attending and adhered to for your benefit and the rest of the course participants. These have been produced in conjunction with Scottish government and CEC guidelines and may be subject to change. OVERVIEW / INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE: For Beginner - establish awareness of materials, composition and colour. For Intermediate - to develop skills to more resolved finished pieces of work. For Advanced - to progress skills, explore new techniques and deepen personal style. HOW THE COURSE WILL BE TAUGHT: Physical demonstrations, practical exercises and informal group discussions whilst working, encouraging the sharing of experience and ideas. WHAT STUDENTS CAN EXPECT TO LEARN: By the end of the course students will have: - have increased their mark making skills considerably, having tried new materials and techniques; - developed an increased awareness of painting styles in relation to significant movements within the history of abstract painting; gained confidence in their own self-expression and applying abstraction techniques to their own work; - deepened their understanding of colour and the light spectrum; - discerned what kind of painting most stimulates them through exploration of various techniques; - learned to use a range of approaches and methods in creating interesting compositions; - developed a coherent series of studies and resolved pieces of work which show the development of a personal approach to abstraction; and - become familiar with modern and contemporary artists who work with abstraction. RESOURCES REQUIRED BY STUDENTS / ADDITIONAL COSTS: A selection of acrylic paint brushes. We will discuss brushes as we go along. I recommend having at least one brush which is larger than an inch wide. Acrylic paints. A set of 5 basic colours (red, yellow, blue, black and white) will do for the first session although students will want to add to this as we progress and learn about the colour spectrum. A sketchbook with thick paper such as cartridge. Any size depending on how large you want to go. You may wish to buy a large pad of A2 cartridge. You may be more comfortable with A4. Though we will be experimenting with scale further on in the course. Selections of loose paper and heavyweight card. Household card will also be useful such as cereal boxes, packaging card. A painting rag. A jar of water. Masking tape. Scissors. Other materials and media can be added later on such as: Willow charcoal and putty rubber' Oli pastels, Chalk pastels, Pens, all varieties.
