Activity description

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENTS: It is the responsibility of participants to ensure they have downloaded and checked they have access to the Microsoft Teams Application. No entry requirements, List of tools required to be emailed ahead of course start date. HEALTH AND SAFETY GUIDELINES: As in studio practice I will advise students on best studio / home practice in relation to cleaning and minimising dust levels. OVERVIEW / INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE: Pottery techniques to be covered will be preparation of clay, slab rolling/building, coiling, press moulds and pinch pottery. This will be aimed at mixed ability’s, those familiar with the techniques will be given a set task or can propose their own project. Surface decoration will be taught using things found in the home or from nature. We will also work on a Japanese technique called Kurinuki a hand-forming process. This technique employs carving out a shaped solid block to obtain an interior space. HOW THE COURSE WILL BE TAUGHT: Tutor will show examples of work made. Demonstrate techniques and work alongside students whilst giving individual feedback and answer any questions raised. WHAT STUDENTS CAN EXPECT TO LEARN: Several pottery techniques which form the basis of any build and further their experience with clay and how to manipulate the material. RESOURCES REQUIRED BY STUDENTS / ADDITIONAL COSTS: Clay will be supplied prior to course starting. Apron, pottery tools (if possible), household items such as tea towels, rolling pin, clingfilm and a knife.
