Activity description

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENTS: It is the responsibility of participants to ensure they have downloaded and checked they have access to the Microsoft Teams Application. No entry requirements OVERVIEW / INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE: What makes Edinburgh special? How has the city’s landscape been created, and how has it influenced people? We will explore Edinburgh's geological past, and discover how the landscape has slowly evolved and continues to change. We will consider how geology and landscape has influenced the development of the city. Students will be encouraged to explore their local landscape and greenspace, and report back on what they find. HOW THE COURSE WILL BE TAUGHT: Online illustrated talks, with plenty of opportunities for questions and discussions. Students will be encouraged to explore local greenspaces and the geology and landscape of Edinburgh, and share their discoveries with the class (for example, by sharing images). WHAT STUDENTS CAN EXPECT TO LEARN: By the end of the course, students will: - understand the story of how Edinburgh’s rocks formed by different processes; - appreciate how the geological variety of the area has resulted in today’s landscape; and - make connections between rocks, landscape and people, considering how the landscape and geological resources of the area have been used by people in the past and present. RESOURCES REQUIRED BY STUDENTS / ADDITIONAL COSTS None specifically – a camera or camera phone and ability to share images with others would be beneficial but not essential.
