Activity description

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENTS: It is the responsibility of participants to ensure they have downloaded and checked they have access to the Microsoft Teams Application. Open to all levels. OVERVIEW / INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE: The course will cover the basics of dressmaking, how to make your own garments and alter the clothes you already have. HOW THE COURSE WILL BE TAUGHT: Mix of pre-recorded tutoring videos, live demonstrations, and group talks that will follow the needs and interests of the students. We will use Google Classroom to share our work and facilitate peer learning. WHAT STUDENTS CAN EXPECT TO LEARN: By the end of the course, students will have learned: - How to take body measurements - How to choose, read and make small alterations to a pattern - How to operate a sewing machine - Overview of the different types of textile materials - Pattern layout, cutting, and ironing - Sewing skills: preparation, applications of various types of stitching, darts, zips, buttonholes, and hems. - How to make special alteration according to your needs RESOURCES REQUIRED BY STUDENTS / ADDITIONAL COSTS Tracing paper, (if using baking paper or similar, due to the narrow width, you may need to join pieces with a stapler or sellotape. Any kind of thin semi-transparent paper will work- even some kinds of packing materials are suitable. Pencil. Tape Measure. T Square and Straight Ruler. Eraser. Fabric Scissors. Pins. Dressmaking chalk. Fabric (you can also repurpose what you already have; eg curtains, duvet covers) and existing garments from your wardrobe. Dressmaking Pattern. Sewing machine- optional (you can also sew by hand). Sewing Needles. Threads. Haberdashery- zips, buttons, interfacing, etc. as required for your particular project.
