Activity description

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENTS: It is the responsibility of participants to ensure they have downloaded and checked they have access to the Microsoft Teams Application. No entry requirements. Suitable for all. OVERVIEW / INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE: One of the strengths of film noir is the character driven stories. This course will take a closer look at the personalities behind those characters, what part they played in the development of the genre and how it impacted their careers. HOW THE COURSE WILL BE TAUGHT: On each preceding Friday, students will receive an email containing two video links – one is the film introduction by Ian Hoey, the second is to watch the film from a free streaming platform. On the immediately following Wednesday, through TEAMS, Ian will lead a discussion on all aspects of the film plus the career of the featured star(s), with particular focus on their place in noir history. WHAT STUDENTS CAN EXPECT TO LEARN: Students can expect to gain a good knowledge of various aspects of the noir genre. Within this, they will see what significance this most influential style of films played in the careers of individuals and how they, in turn, impacted the genre as a whole. RESOURCES REQUIRED BY STUDENTS / ADDITIONAL COSTS: All video links are expected to be free and, should there be any exceptions, they would be at the minimal YouTube rental fee of £3.49, so there should be very little additional cost, if any. Students will be expected to have a good enough broadband connection to view films on platforms such as YouTube.
