Activity description

OVERVIEW / INTRODUCTION TO COURSE: Has the lockdown prompted an urge to tell your life story? Join creative writing MLitt, Sarah Howells for an Introduction to Creative Life Writing: and online 5-week course. In it, we will discuss the benefits of journalling, use a prompt object to focus on a memory, watch a series of short videos on different aspects of life writing, have a one-to-one with Sarah to discuss your piece of writing then in the final week we will share completed stories. There will be homework and class notes to help along the way. These sessions are inclusive and supportive and Sarah encourages those who would not normally be able to physically get to a class. Email infor@writetoremember for more information or sign up via the Adult Education Programme link. NUMBER OF WEEKS / HOURS: Five weeks (1+ hour per week). DAY AND TIME FOR THE INTERACTIVE CLASS DISCUSSION: Thursdays at 2.00pm – 3.00pm (from 23rd July 2020). HOW THE COURSE WILL BE TAUGHT: Three interactive video class sessions (wks 1,2 & 5), one week of instructional videos/self-directed writing, a personal one-to-one session with facilitator and class notes. WHAT STUDENTS CAN EXPECT TO LEARN: How to craft a chapter of your story using creative writing techniques, what to include/leave out, structure and tone, the benefits of journalling, beginnings/endings, editing and truth vs a good story. This will form a kind of template with which to tackle the writing of the other stories from their lives. WHAT DO STUDENTS NEED TO PROVIDE? An object with which to connect a memory for Week 2. This could be an ornament, a letter, a photo, a recipe, a stone/driftwood, a piece of jewellery, a record, a book, a train ticket, anything… ARE THERE ANY HEALTH AND SAFETY GUIDELINES TO FOLLOW? Non-judgmental kindness, acceptance of others’ lives
