Activity description

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: This course is aimed at those with some basic experience of art. For example, students will have already taken a beginners course in painting or drawing and will be familiar with basic drawing materials. But really, an open mind and a desire to express yourself is all you need. WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO LEARN: By the end of the course students will be able to: - use a range of approaches and methods in producing unique works; - demonstrate confidence in applying abstraction techniques to their own work; - develop a coherent series of studies and resolved pieces of work which show the development of a personal approach to abstraction; and be familiar with some of the work of a selection of modern and contemporary artists who work with abstraction. HOW THE COURSE WILL BE TAUGHT: Through simple, structured exercises, students will be taught: a range of simple techniques for abstracting from source material; how to gather personal source material on location, in sketchbooks and in the studio; how to develop studies and move from studies to more resolved work. A range of teaching methods will be used within each session, and over the duration of the course, appropriate to the material being taught, the abilities of the student and to address students’ preferred learning styles, including: point of reference studio and on-location exercises; practical demonstrations and slide shows; group discussion and one-to-one tuition. MATERIALS REQUIRED BY STUDENT; APPROXIMATE & ADDITIONAL COSTS: Various paper scraps, colours, newspapers postcards. Any paper or card of interest really. A variety of basic pencils, crayons, pens, anything from Biros to markers, highlighters, paint pens, Sharpies, etc. As the course evolves many more materials will be suggested. ESSENTIAL: A small, inexpensive sketchbook which is easily carried, say A4 maximum size All can be purchased for approximately £10.00.
