Activity description

NB: The first session of this course will be at South Bridge Resource Centre. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: No prior knowledge required but an interest and enthusiasm for the Visual Arts would be an advantage. WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO LEARN: By the end of the course it is hoped that all participants will feel confident and better informed when visiting any gallery in the city and beyond and that they will be able to more confidently express, analyse and structure opinions on the visual arts. Participants will hopefully learn that there is rarely the ‘correct opinion,’ rather there are many opinions on any given piece of visual art and amongst them their own is equally as valid. HOW THE COURSE WILL BE TAUGHT: Encourage participants to become enthusiastic and confident about visiting galleries in the city and beyond and develop skills in appreciating and analysing art works in their various forms. To help them to feel confident about entering into debate of artworks and exploring the contribution that the visual arts makes to the fabric of our society, and how they also contribute to who one is locally, nationally and internationally. Sessions will be gallery based and in most instances will be tutor led. They will generally be discussion-based and participants will be encouraged to express their own thoughts, ideas and opinions in a collaborative and receptive manner. Some sessions will also be in the form of a tutorial wherein the delivery style will be a little more formal but will not lose the inclusive and collaborative approach. Also the tutor may arrange for an in–house introductory session by a gallery staff member. All sessions will be discussed in advance of any visit and what that visit will entail. MATERIALS REQUIRED BY STUDENT; APPROXIMATE & ADDITIONAL COSTS: In the first instance Tutor notes and web links will be issued in the form of a CD but any participant who does not have access to or is not comfortable with a computer may have paper. Tutor will e-mail participants each week with web links and information about planned visit. Participants may wish to bring a small notebook and sometimes photography is permitted in any given gallery. However permission must be sought from gallery staff if photography is allowed. Most galleries are free to enter but occasionally a particular exhibition may have an entrance fee and the usual concessionary prices will pertain and in a lot of instances the Tutor will be able to arrange a further concession for a group. For regular gallery goers the yearly pass is often a very economical way to keep costs down.
