Activity description

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: No formal entry requirements. This course is designed for all levels but some experience of drawing, painting, or mixed media would be helpful. GENERAL AIM OF THE COURSE: To build up confidence and encourage experimentation through exploring a variety of drawing materials, water-based paint and mixed-media, referring to a range of subject matter. WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO LEARN: By the end of the course students will have: - enhanced their skills in drawing; - mark-making, line and tone and in planning composition, use of perspective and proportion using a variety of media; - greater appreciation of colour mixing, layering and brushwork in water-based media (watercolour or acrylic), with the option of incorporating ink pen and oil pastel; and - increased their knowledge of different approaches and methods of expression, through reference material (art books/examples) and discussion. GENERAL APPROACH TO THE COURSE: Demonstrations will be given by the tutor alongside individual support. Subjects will include landscape, urban scenes, portrait and studies from nature/still life. MATERIALS REQUIRED BY STUDENTS: B, 2B and 4B pencils/graphite sticks, charcoal, box of soft (chalky) pastels or pastel pencils/coloured pencils and putty rubber. A3 cartridge sketchbook and/or mixed colour pastel sketchbook. Fine or micro permanent pens or ink pen with Indian ink. Set of oil pastels - optional. Basic set of acrylics or watercolour box, acrylic or watercolour brushes, small natural sponge, acrylic or watercolour sketchbook - 14 x 10' approx. A comprehensive materials list will be provided by the tutor.
