Activity description

NB: The weekly meeting place for this course is inside the main entrance of Modern One, Belford Road. An Introduction to the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art Collection. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: No formal entry requirements. No prior knowledge is necessary but students should have an interest in finding out about the history of modern art, and an open mind! WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO LEARN: By the end of the course students will have: - a basic knowledge of the various rooms in Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art; - an overview of the main art movements represented in the gallery; - studied in more detail some key works in the collection; and gained confidence in talking about personal responses to the art, and discussing the works with the rest of the group. HOW THE COURSE WILL BE TAUGHT: All sessions will be based at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art at Belford Road. We will visit a different section of the gallery each week, in chronological order, starting with art at the beginning of the 20th century and moving through the collection up to contemporary art. Each week the tutor will introduce the week’s subject, then we will look at about 12 to 15 works in more detail. Although the sessions will be tutor-led, students will be encouraged to discuss the works and give their own opinions and comments in an inclusive and mutually supportive manner. Time will be allowed for students to view the art on their own. MATERIALS REQUIRED BY STUDENT; APPROXIMATE & ADDITIONAL COSTS: The permanent collections of the National Galleries of Scotland are free to enter, so no additional costs are involved. Portable folding stools are available at the gallery to be borrowed.
