Activity description

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: No formal entry requirements. An interest in illustration, drawing, stories and picture books. Some experience of drawing would be good. This course would suit people new to illustration as well as those who have done some illustration before. The course would be a good follow on from the beginners' illustration course, but it is not necessary to have done the previous course. WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO LEARN: This course would suit students who have an illustration project in mind and/or started and who would benefit from time set aside each week to work on it and from some input from a tutor and other students. Your project could be illustrating your own writing or an event in your own life/family history, producing an illustrated children's story, creating a series of illustrations on a particular topic ... anything. N.B. for those who wish to have more guidance on subjects to illustrate, briefs will be set by the tutor. By the end of the course students will have learned to: - gather ideas, images and information in a sketchbook; - work on creating illustrations to a brief; - plan a storyboard; - develop an individual style and experiment with creating characters; and - design and produce a short illustrated narrative or a series of linked illustrations. HOW THE COURSE WILL BE TAUGHT: The tutor will discuss with students their individual interests and requirements from the course. Students will be introduced to the processes involved with illustrating a subject/passage of text in an encouraging, fun atmosphere. While students will mainly work individually, group discussion and exchange of ideas will be encouraged. Students will be encouraged to experiment with different materials and approaches. We will look at illustrations from books and learn from each others’ work. Some optional homework will be given. MATERIALS REQUIRED BY STUDENT; APPROXIMATE & ADDITIONAL COSTS: There is no need to purchase expensive materials. Information will be given at the first session. An A4 sketchbook (bound is best), plus an A3 white paper pad, would be good to start with plus a selection of pencils (HB – 5B), coloured pencils, black pens (felt tips, graphic pens) or whatever you enjoy using. N.B. if you have a particular project you would like to work on, please bring along any reference material you will need, e.g. photographs, drawings, text etc.
