Activity description

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: This short course is aimed at those with some basic experience of art. For example, students will have already taken a beginner course in painting or drawing and will be familiar with basic drawing materials and acrylic paint. WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO LEARN: By the end of the course, students will have: • tried out simple abstraction techniques to use within their own work; • developed a series of studies within which students start to explore the potential of abstraction; • become familiar with a selection of modern; and contemporary artists who work with abstraction. HOW THE COURSE WILL BE TAUGHT: Through simple, structured exercises, students will be taught: • simple techniques for abstracting from source material; • how to work from point of reference material in the studio; • how to develop studies from initial point of reference material. I will use a range of teaching methods appropriate to the material being taught, the abilities of the student and to address students’ preferred learning styles. These will include: • a point of reference studio exercise; • practical demonstrations and presentation of reference material from books; • group discussion and one-to-one tuition. MATERIALS REQUIRED BY STUDENT; APPROXIMATE & ADDITIONAL COSTS: Several inexpensive artists’ brushes, various sizes, say sizes 8, 11, 12. A starter pack of acrylic paint, or inexpensive individual tubes of: • cadmium yellow • cerulean and/or ultramarine blue, • cadmium red • titanium white (a large tub of inexpensive white is best). A pencil for drawing, say grade ‘B’. A small, inexpensive sketchbook which is easily carried, say A4 maximum size. The supplies above can be purchased for approximately £30.
