Activity description

This course will teach you how to use a sketchbook to develop ideas and images for art and design projects. You will be shown how to use experimental drawing and mark-making techniques to develop ideas from initial photos and sketches. You will also learn some simple creative thinking techniques to help stimulate ideas for visual themes. This course will be useful for those who have previously taken a range of art courses, as well as designers, florists and others working in creative careers. All levels welcome. Students will be interested in learning how to organise their visual ideas and may be from a variety of backgrounds. WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO LEARN: By the end of the course students will learn: how to use a range of experimental drawing and mark-making techniques to develop ideas from initial sketches and starting points; how to use a simple creative thinking tools to prompt and organise visual themes; the potential value of personal source material for developing their own visual ideas. GENERAL APPROACH TO THE COURSE: The class will be taught through tutor demonstrations and structured practical exercises in which students will be encouraged to experiment with a variety of approaches to drawing and image-making. There will also be talks by the tutor on aspects of sketchbook development, illustrated with examples of artist sketchbooks which students can look at. Individual discussions will be held with each student to identify particular interests or concerns. A personal theme may be pursued during the course. Each students’ progress will be monitored on a weekly basis and additional reading, research and practice will be suggested to support their interests.
