Activity description

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Students should have attended Beginner courses (28 - 36 hours) or have an equivalent knowledge of the language, ie ability to communicate basic personal information and cope with every day or holiday situations such as travel, making bookings, eating out, etc. WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO LEARN: By the end of the course students should be able to: Talk about personal likes and dislikes and leisure activities; Describe their daily routine – “I get up at … , take the bus to work, have lunch at 1:00” etc; Talk about their habits – “I usually go to the cinema at the weekend”, “I rarely drink alcohol”, etc; Ask questions of others and talk more explicitly about their job; make plans for the future; Describe events that have taken place in the past; Use language in different social and professional contexts; Develop their knowledge of the social norms and culture of the country. GENERAL APPROACH TO THE COURSE: Class teaching, using mainly the communicative approach, which is task orientated with the emphasis on speaking, pronunciation and listening; pair work and small group work; role play and learning how to deal with a variety of scenarios, ie – the workplace, family life, addressing strangers or colleagues etc; audio visual supports as appropriate will be used. Please note that progress can benefit from studying the language outside of the class. MATERIALS REQUIRED BY STUDENTS: At the first meeting pen and paper is all that will be needed. The tutor may recommend a course book to be purchased by each student or may rely entirely on materials pre-prepared. Do not purchase a course book until after the first meeting of the class. A bilingual dictionary will be a useful acquisition. Cost of course book and dictionary approx £20.
