Activity description

The aim of this course is to give an introduction on how graphic novels and comic books are built and give students the opportunity to start making their own. Students will learn some drawing and composition techniques and the basic ways of telling a story through images. They will be helped to develop their own style and use their creativity to draw a short comic. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Previous experience in a drawing class is desirable but, more importantly, you should enjoy drawing and telling stories. WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO LEARN: By the end of the course, students will have created 2 pages of comic/graphic novel; and will have learned: - basic techniques of composition and ways share feelings and ideas through images; - ways of expressing the passage of time in images; - techniques on how to create a character; - ways to build a page; and - how to use the pen and ink technique and a brush pen (optional). GENERAL APPROACH TO THE COURSE: On the first day, the students will learn composition techniques and the basics of telling a story with images. The students will work on creating their main character and on preparatory sketches for their short comic book. On the second day, they will work on their final project from the pencil drawings to the inking up of the drawings. The course will be taught in a relaxed way and the students are encouraged to bring graphic novels and comics that they like to share with the others.
