Activity description

Nature walk - as we identify birds from their song and calls, discovering useful and fun ways to tune into the language of woodland birds. Then a practical workshop of making a bird box and bird feeders. We will explore Craigmillar Castle Park. Meeting place is at Bridgend Farmhouse, 41 Old Dalkeith Road, EH16 4TD. This day course is delivered in conjunction with the community group Bridgend Inspiring Growth, http://www.bridgendfarmhouse.org.uk/ ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: An interest in birds and nature. WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO LEARN: By the end of the course, students will have learned: - to identify woodland birds by their song and call; - to understand how to attract birds to a garden; - practical skills in how to make a wooden bird box; - safe use of wood working tools; and - how to make a couple of different bird feeders. HOW THE COURSE WILL BE TAUGHT: Teaching methods: Listening to songs and calls; Using work notes and photos to aid identification; Undertake bird surveys. Develop a sound map of the park and green spaces; Step by step on how to build boxes and bird feeders. MATERIALS REQUIRED BY STUDENT; APPROXIMATE & ADDITIONAL COSTS: Bring plenty of warm outdoor and footwear clothing to suit the weather. The majority of the day will be spent outdoors. Students should also bring: Binoculars; Additional cost of £13 per person for bird boxes and bird feeders to be paid to the tutor on the day of the course. Lunch - soup and bread provided. Bring additional lunch ingredients to share.
