Activity description

THIS COURSE WAS PREVIOUSLY ADVERTISED AS BEING 14:00-16:00. THE ACTUAL TIME OF THE CLASS IS 15:00-17:00 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: This short course is aimed at those with some basic experience of art. For example, students will have already taken a beginners’ course in painting or drawing and will be familiar with basic drawing materials and acrylic paint. WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO LEARN: By the end of the course, students will have: • tried out simple abstraction techniques to use within their own work • developed a series of studies within which students start to explore the potential of abstraction • become familiar with a selection of modern and contemporary artists who work with abstraction HOW THE COURSE WILL BE TAUGHT: Through simple, structured exercises, students will be taught: • simple techniques for abstracting from source material • how to work from point of reference material in the studio • how to develop studies from initial point of reference material I will use a range of teaching methods appropriate to the material being taught, the abilities of the student and to address students’ preferred learning styles. These will include: • a point of reference studio exercise • practical demonstrations and presentation of reference material from books • group discussion and one-to-one tuition MATERIALS REQUIRED BY STUDENT; APPROXIMATE & ADDITIONAL COSTS: Several inexpensive artists’ brushes, various sizes, say sizes 8, 11, 12. A starter pack of acrylic paint, or inexpensive individual tubes of: • cadmium yellow • cerulean and/or ultramarine blue, • cadmium red • titanium white (a large tub of inexpensive white is best). A pencil for drawing, say grade ‘B’ A small, inexpensive sketchbook which is easily carried, say A4 maximum size The supplies above can be purchased for approximately £30.
