Activity description

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: no entry requirements. This class is suitable for beginners and also offers development for those who have some experience. WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO LEARN: By the end of the course students will have learned the principles of wet and dry feltmaking, including -an understanding of the way the wool behaves, -properties of different kinds of wool, - colour blending of fibres -a range of surface embellishment possibilities -use of single and multiple resists and thus be able to plan and produce a range of items, both flat and space filling/holding, ie scarf/mat to bag/pot /hat etc dry/needle felting- creating little models, with or without an internal support. HOW THE COURSE WILL BE TAUGHT: techniques are demonstrated by the tutor; tutor brings samples, pictures, challenges, students are supported by the tutor during the class, and the group shares its learning by watching each others’ progress with particular projects. MATERIALS REQUIRED BY STUDENT; APPROXIMATE & ADDITIONAL COSTS: Students should bring scissors, notebook, pencil, an old towel (hand towel would be big enough, larger is fine too)and plastic bag to bring home their work, and ideally an old plastic bottle eg liquid bleach/clothes wash or similar- a bottle that can hold hot water with a lid that can be drilled to make wee holes in. There will be some wool for the first class, then students will need to buy their own, the tutor will suggest sources. Merino wool tops cost approximately £3.50-£4.00 per 100gm- 100 gm is plenty to make a fine scarf, maybe not quite enough for a pair of slippers.
