Activity description

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: No formal entry requirements. An interest in illustration, drawing, stories and picture books. Some experience of drawing would be useful. This course would suit beginners, people new to illustration and people with a little more experience. WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO LEARN: By the end of the course students will have learned to: - gather ideas, images and information in a sketchbook; - work on creating illustrations to briefs set by the tutor; - plan a storyboard for an illustrated narrative; - develop an individual style and experiment with creating characters; and - design and produce a short illustrated story book. HOW THE COURSE WILL BE TAUGHT: Students will be introduced to the processes involved with illustrating a subject/passage of text in an encouraging, fun atmosphere. While students will mainly work individually, group discussion and exchange of ideas will be encouraged. Students will be encouraged to experiment with different materials and approaches. We will look at illustrations from books and learn from each others’ work. Some optional homework will be given. If students already have an illustration project in mind that they would like to work on, they will have the opportunity to do so. MATERIALS REQUIRED BY STUDENT; APPROXIMATE & ADDITIONAL COSTS: There is no need to purchase expensive materials. Information will be given at the first session. An A4 sketchbook (bound is best), plus an A3 white paper pad, would be good to start with plus a selection of pencils (HB – 5B), coloured pencils, black pens (felt tips, graphic pens) or whatever you enjoy using.
