Activity description

This silver jewellery course is aimed at beginners, who will work on one step-by-step project in sterling silver - using both sheet and wire. Please note that this is a very hands-on course and students should feel comfortable learning how to use saws, soldering equipment, hammers, files etc. Students will complete a silver round wire bangle with a hand-pierced decorative charm in sheet silver and add a small bead or pearl if desired. The following techniques will be covered : hand-sawing sheet metal, filing, hammering and soldering. Students will also learn how to use a range of small jewellery tools and decorative punches and get the opportunity to use the rolling mill to imprint patterns into metal and use the barrel polisher. Templates of simple designs will be available for the charm (heart, flower, bird etc), but students may wish to design their own form. This shape will be saw-pierced out by hand and textures applied with hammers/punches or roll-printing. WHAT TO BRING A sketch book or note pad - not just a phone please, plus pencils, a pair of scissors and a ruler. A black fine-line marker pen, such as a Sharpie, is very useful if you have one at home. Students may wish in items for roll-printing (the tutor will also bring in various materials for this - plus also supply artist leaves at a small extra cost). The following items are ideal for roll-printing: onion skins, sweetcorn leaves, dried hydrangea flowers, fine grasses - please note all natural objects must be completely dry and without moisture. Cotton or other tighlty woven fabric, scrim, fine fabric netting, coarse/or spotted ribbon, lace, string, sandpaper, handmade/watercolour paper, feathers. There is a materials cost of £14 to cover all sterling silver, a small piece of copper sheet and sawblades. This is in addition to the course fee and should be paid in cash to the tutor at the start of the class.
