Activity description

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: No entry requirements – suitable for complete beginners and more experienced students. WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO LEARN: By the end of the course students will have learned to make a piece of silver jewellery of their own design, using such skills as soldering, saw piercing, roll printing, drilling, filing and polishing. Students will also learn to use hand tools. It is very much a hands-on course and students should feel happy to use hammers, saws, drills, soldering torches etc. HOW THE COURSE WILL BE TAUGHT: Beginners will work in copper for the first 2 weeks, learning basic skills before progressing to work in silver. Different techniques will be covered week by week. MATERIALS REQUIRED BY STUDENT; APPROXIMATE & ADDITIONAL COSTS: Beginners will need to purchase a starter packs from the tutor at the start of the course. The cost of this is £10 and includes copper and materials for learning the basics in jewellery making, before progressing to working with silver. The starter pack does not include silver. This will enable them to work in copper in the early stages of the course. Once a design has been agreed with the tutor, the student can purchase silver from a recommended supplier. The tutor will advise exactly what to purchase. Students are advised to bring in a small sketchbook/notebook (not just a phone please), pencils, a ruler and scissors. A sandwich box is also useful for carrying materials, plus a fine line Sharpie black pen is useful if you have one at home.
