Activity description

NB: The meeting point for the first session of this course will be South Bridge Resource Centre. Thereafter, we will be going outdoors to sketch locally, which will include a demonstration to be given by tutor. Meeting at a different venue each week, we will consider composition, choose a view or area and select focal points of personal interest within garden and park settings, such as plants, trees, topiary, as well as pathways, benches, statues and rooftops, in both close up studies and more distant scenes. Locations will include Princes Street Gardens and Saughton Park/Gardens. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: For all levels but some experience of drawing or sketching would be useful, however enthusiasm and willingness to learn are of equal importance. WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO LEARN: By the end of the course students will have achieved a greater sense of freedom of expression using drawing materials and handle watercolour with more confidence, to capture the essence of a scene they have chosen. Students will be encouraged to experiment with textural mark-making, line, tone and colour, whilst incorporating perspective and proportion in order to develop a more lively approach. HOW THE COURSE WILL BE TAUGHT: Demonstrations will be given by the tutor alongside individual tuition and support. Starting with drawing then moving on to watercolour, working in sketchbooks is intended to promote a sense of progression, almost like a diary. MATERIALS REQUIRED BY STUDENTS; APPROXIMATE/ADDITIONAL COSTS: A4 or A5 cartridge sketchbook (depending on preference), 2B and 4B pencils, graphite sticks or charcoal pencils, putty rubber, coloured pencils or pastel pencils. Sketching set of watercolours, set of watercolour brushes and small watercolour sketchbook. Please bring a sketchbook and pencils on first week of meeting. A schedule and list of materials will be provided by tutor.
