Activity description

NB: The meeting point for the first session of this course is South Bridge Resource Centre. Further exploration of Edinburgh's landscape and the rocks beneath and find out the many ways in which geology has influenced the development of the city. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: None. This course is principally aimed at students who have completed Geology Beginners walks but is open to all and no prior knowledge is assumed. WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO LEARN: By the end of the course students will: - be able to identify the different rocks of Edinburgh; - understand of the story of how these rocks formed, by different processes; - appreciate how the variety of Edinburgh's rocks has resulted in a varied landscape; and - understand how the rocks of Edinburgh have influenced the development of the city. HOW THE COURSE WILL BE TAUGHT: This course will comprise 5 informal, short walks around different parts of the city where we will get a chance to see different rock types and landscapes and see how these have influenced people. Each walk will be at a slow pace, on good paths and pavements, and accessible by public transport. First meeting will include short classroom session to introduce the course, followed by a short city centre walk including the Meadows area. Other walks will be: 2. Blackford Hill & Hermitage of Braid - explore ancient volcanic rocks related to the Pentland Hills. 3. Craiglockhart area - Water of Leith and Craiglockhart Hill. Combination of sedimentary rocks along the river and volcanic rocks forming the hill. 4. Joppa shore. Walk from Portobello to Musselburgh and explore sedimentary rocks of the Midlothian coalfield. 5. Corstorphine Hill. Walk along the summit ridge and discover how this tough lump of igneous rock has been used by people over the ages. MATERIALS REQUIRED BY STUDENTS: Good walking shoes and warm waterproof clothing.
