Activity description

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: None, all levels welcome. For beginners - establish awareness of materials, composition and colour. For intermediate - to develop skills to more resolved finished pieces of work. For advanced - to progress skills, explore new techniques and deepen personal style. WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO LEARN: By the end of the course students will: - have increased their mark making skills considerably, having tried new materials and techniques; and - developed an increased awareness of painting and drawing styles in relation to the history of art traditions. HOW THE COURSE WILL BE TAUGHT: Many sessions will begin with short slide presentations from the tutor related to class exercise which will vary weekly/every two weeks. Where relevant a short materials demonstration will also be given but in the main, students will learn by practical activity, building up confidence with a variety of materials and subject matter. The tutor will continually give personal attention to the variety of needs present, and to encourage the development of personal style. Subjects will include still life, natural objects, painting to music, and poetic narratives. MATERIALS REQUIRED BY STUDENTS; APPROX/ADDITIONAL COSTS: Please bring along basics to the first session, eg paper or sketchbook, pencil and/or pastels. Other materials and media can be added later on, such as a selection of drawing pencils, charcoal (sticks of varying thicknesses, and compressed charcoal pencils if possible) an eraser (ordinary and putty). Fixative or hairspray. Sharpener or scalpel. Acrylic paints. Coloured pencils, coloured chalks and oil pastel set. Selections of loose paper and heavyweight card A3 or A2 size. Small sketchbook A5 or A4. Selection of paint brushes. Rags for blending or cleaning. Protective apron or old shirt. Students should wait until the course commences to get information/advice from tutor before purchasing costly materials and also to confirm viability of course. Discount can be obtained from certain suppliers on production of course receipt.
