Activity description

(There will be no classes on 1 and 22 May and this course will now run 6.30 - 9pm). ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: No formal entry requirements. All levels welcome. For Health & Safety reasons it is important you have good use of both hands and good vision to take part in this course. LEARNING OUTCOMES: By the end of the course students will have learned/be able to: • Experimented with a range of book binding techniques; • Gained confidence using a range of book binding tools and terminology; • Developed an understanding of compatible bindings and materials • An understanding of useful book binding resources, including books/websites and local suppliers. HOW THE COURSE WILL BE TAUGHT: Demonstrations, examples and step-by-step instruction accompanied by helpful print outs and hands-on guidance. A range of book binding techniques will be introduced over the 5 week course, allowing students to experiment with a range of stitches and create a number of finished books. The following techniques will be covered during the course with the option to incorporate a leather, fabric or card cover: - Japanese Stab binding – Pamphlet stitch - Exposed straight stitch – Back-to-back fold binding - Origa,i binding. A mix of new, recycled and pre-used materials will be used in this course and the emphasis will be on working with everyday materials. MATERIALS REQUIRED BY STUDENTS/ APPROX. COST/ADDITIONAL COSTS: There will be a cost of £10 payable directly to the Tutor for materials. Students are encouraged to bring in additional papers, fabric, leather, thread, beads and buttons to incorporate into their books to add a personal touch. PLEASE NOTE: animal leather will be used in this course, if you would prefer not to use leather please get in touch to let the tutor know in advance so that she can source an alternative.
