Activity description

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: None, the classes are aimed at beginners and those who need to begin again. GENERAL AIM OF THE COURSE: To provide an introduction to some of the basic sewing and associated techniques to enable students to make a simple article such as an apron or something similar, or to carry out alterations to existing garments if they prefer to do so. LEARNING OUTCOMES: By the end of the course, students will have learned how to: - measure and cut fabric properly; - achieve a good fit; - carry out basic alterations; and/or - make a simple article. GENERAL APPROACH TO THE COURSE: Tuition will be delivered in a class setting where one-to-one guidance is provided but can be limited depending upon class size and overall time constraints. Students should be prepared to fully participate in and contribute to group learning sessions and to learn from other students and share experiences. MATERIALS REQUIRED BY STUDENTS: Sewing machines will be provided for use in class but may need to be shared. Students must bring along a basic, inexpensive sewing kit that contains sewing needles, at least 2 colours of thread - one of which to match the material, dressmaking pins, tape measure and sharp scissors. For the first session, students should bring an alteration to work on.
