Activity description

Pilates is a physical exercise system that largely emphasises the role of the muscles of the trunk in support of the spine and their effect on posture. With relaxing background music, the exercises are executed slowly to allow students to work on their alignment, with their own breathing, at an individual level with the aim of facilitating functional joint flexibility, muscle strength and balance; and development of body awareness. Entry Requirements: Students must be able to move down and up to and from the floor easily as exercises are largely floor/mat based and have attended a Pilate’s class previously for two terms. What can you expect to learn: By the end of the course, students will have learned/be able to: Students will have increased understanding of the principles of Pilates, develop greater control in those exercises taught in class, more awareness of their own body management in sitting and standing postures,, and everyday tasks. How the course will be taught: Explanation with demonstration, individual correction and encouragement may be given. Materials required by students: Approximate & additional cost: Non-slip exercise mat, clothing that allows complete freedom of movement, a warm top, a small towel to roll up.
