Activity description
BEGINNER LEVEL – LANGUAGES (GENERIC COURSE DESCRIPTION) ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: It is assumed that students have no knowledge, or very little knowledge of the language to be studied. WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO LEARN: By the end of the course students should be able to: greet people in formal and informal situations; talk about themselves and their families; give basic descriptions; use numbers; tell the time, know the days of the week, months and seasons of the year; understand money; understand simple menus and order food and refreshments; give and take directions; make appointments and reservations; check in to a hotel; get a sense of the culture of the country. HOW THE COURSE WILL BE TAUGHT: Class teaching, using mainly the communicative approach, which is task orientated with the emphasis on speaking, pronunciation and listening; pair work and small group work; role play and learning how to deal with a variety of scenarios, ie - in the restaurant, finding your way about a city, asking for information etc; audio visual supports as appropriate will be used. Please note that progress can benefit from studying the language outside of the class. MATERIALS REQUIRED BY STUDENTS: At the first meeting pen and paper is all that will be needed. The tutor may recommend a course book to be purchased by each student or may rely entirely on materials pre-prepared. Do not purchase a course book until after the first meeting of the class. A bilingual dictionary will be a useful acquisition. Cost of course book and dictionary approx £20.
