Activity description

NB: The meeting point for the first session of this course is South Bridge Resource Centre. This course aims to develop skills in appreciating and commenting on art works from the past and present. We will visit a variety of exhibitions in Edinburgh's galleries and occasionally museums. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: None but an enthusiasm and interest for the visual arts and a willingness to contribute to discussions is an advantage. WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO LEARN: By the end of the course students will have gained a wider appreciation of a variety of different art forms. Participants will feel confident about expressing ideas and opinions about the visual arts. GENERAL APPROACH TO THE COURSE: For the first session we will meet in South Bridge Community Centre. The first 30 minutes will be required for registration and general discussion of the course including session logistics. We will then visit a gallery close to the Centre. Each week we will meet in a different venue as the course is gallery based. We will begin each session with a tour of the exhibition. Where appropriate the tutor will liaise with galleries' educational staff to arrange in-house guides. The sessions will be informal and participants will be encouraged to discuss opinions and share ideas throughout the visits. Then there will be time to view the exhibition by yourself. There will be a coffee break during each session in the gallery cafe. MATERIALS REQUIRED BY STUDENTS: None. Students will be able to buy refreshments at the gallery cafe during the session. Paying exhibitions may have an additional entry fee. This charge will be advised of beforehand.
