Activity description

NB: There is very limited parking available at this venue, particularly when school events are taking place. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: No entry requirements. All levels welcome. WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO LEARN: By the end of the course students will be able to: - explore observation skills within a range of subjects; - gain confidence with different materials; - bring out an image step by step through contrast and tone; - understand colour combinations, layering, balance and composition; and - express qualities of Light, depth and simplification. HOW THE COURSE WILL BE TAUGHT: The tutor also does the exercises, providing practical indications and ongoing demonstration throughout the classes. The starting point is from different visual references and a range of artists both historical and contemporary, presented through slides, printed images as well as three dimensional subjects and still-life. The emphasis is on developing a flexible style that adapts to different situations as well as developing new skills. You will be encouraged to look at art objectively and to consider galleries. There is both group and individual guidance and discussion with plenty of opportunity to bring your own questions and to develop your own project as you like. MATERIALS REQUIRED BY STUDENT; APPROXIMATE & ADDITIONAL COSTS: Thick A2 cartridge papers with A2 cardboard to rest on (the back of a pad of cartridge paper is sufficient); colour A2 sugar paper (scrapbooks) or brown wrapping paper; masking tape; thick willow charcoal; white chalk; ordinary rubber; colour chalk pastels; TUBES of water-based paints; large (1cm) FLAT bristle brushes (all available from The Works and other discount stores); cheap hair spray (Supermarket). This can all be built up gradually for approx. £15 and the tutor will discuss what to get, discounts and where to save money. Bring what you can to the first class.
