Overview / introduction to the course

This course will provide an overview of the development of Modern art through selected movements and artists, from Impressionism to Surrealism. We will conduct an in-depth visual analysis of artworks and relate them to their historical context and influence on subsequent styles.

How the course will be taught

Concise notes will be distributed before each session to provide students with background information. During the interactive meetings we will look at the artworks together, and discuss several key questions relating to formal analysis, technique, reception, and influence. Students will be encouraged to share their own ideas and opinions.

What students can expect to learn

Students will learn to identify key styles and artists’ work from the period, and understand the context behind them, including their original reception versus how we view them today. They will be equipped with the tools of visual analysis and specialist terminology to fully appreciate artworks in the future.
