Course level and entry requirements

Students must be available to participate in every session of this course.

All level. There are no entry requirements. Students will be invited to visit their local green spaces in their own time each week for inspiration and gathering materials.

Overview / introduction to the course

You are invited to step outdoors for refreshing inspiration, discover treasures in your own neighbourhood and create something lovely in the comfort of your home.  Plants are our focus but Students will learn about the Ecology and History of a new setting each week; Plant Identification; Local History; Storytelling; Creative use for the plants, and a 'Plants of the Week Quiz to end each session then discuss at the beginning of the next.

Week 1 - Step Into the Autumn Outdoors

The first session is set in a community garden, 15 minutes walk away from where I live , briefly exploring the environment and  interesting plants to be found there.  It's mainly about encouraging folks to get outdoors.  I may use this place each week (again for continuity) but vary it with other environments.

I will give a short introduction and exercise at each session, inviting participants to experience the outdoors using all five senses: Sight, Sound, Touch, Smell and Taste.

The explanation of where I am situated is brief - to encourage participants to visit any outdoor space be it their garden, local green space, local park, local woodland or wild space.   Each week I may start with the multi-sensory exercise -and I will vary it a little each week to keep it interesting but also to add continuity.   Very calming and good to tune in -mindfullness hidden in plain sight.

How the course will be taught

The course is a mixture of Video presentation, online group delivery and interactive activities.

What students can expect to learn

As well as introductory and background information, participants will be able to:

  • Discover the ecology of a new, outdoor space each week through a brief presentation - insect, bird & wildlife (Video Presentation)

  • Feel the Health & Wellbeing benefits of being in local, outdoor environments through our 5 senses

  • Build up their knowledge of 5 plants each week

  • Learn about an Artist who uses plant references in their work

  • Try some creative techniques in using plants and natural materials to make a small artwork for their notebook/ sketchbook, or similar

  • Listen to different Tree Lore story to end each session

  • Take part in the Plants of the Week I.D. Quiz - 5 other plants.

Resources required by students and additional costs

It would be good for participants to have some stationery items: an A4 or A5 sketchbook or notebook, some coloured pencils, a pencil and a pen, scissors, string, cellotape and glue (pritt stick or similar).  The tutor will have resources to share with participants.

Health and safety guidelines

Outdoors: Weather appropriate clothing and sensible footwear is recommended when walking in local parks and greenspaces for comfort and safety.  Remember to take a bag to gather some natural materials.

Indoors: A black bin bag and newspaper would be good for protecting table surfaces -both items Students may already have at home.

What students could do next

Take part in Further Adventures with Plants with me! Continue to record adventures in their Sketchbooks and notebooks, look online for further inspiration.
